Beaches

Kefalonia does not disappoint in the beach department. We only went to 2 (both multiple times), but we were very happy with what we found.

Petani Beach

About a 15 minute drive from Monopolata down a bunch of hairpin turns, you find Petani Beach. Umbrellas and chairs to rent and a fabulous and very inexpensive but very delicious taverna. A busier beach but as the season is still early, it didn't feel too crowded. We went to this beach three times. Once just to see the sunset but stayed for some wine which turned into dinner. A second time to go to the actual beach. The water was a bit cold but once you warmed up to it, it was lovely. And a third for dinner and to watch another sunset.

Atheras Beach

This beach was about 30 minutes from Monopolata -- a slightly less harrowing drive which was quite beautiful and scenic. This felt like a much more local beach. No chairs or umbrellas to rent, mabye 6 people total were there the first time we went. The second time, maybe a dozen? It was blissfully quiet and had a more shallow bay which made the water  a little bit warmer and easier to swim. Another wonderful and inexpensive taverna here as well. Overall, we liked Atheras a bit more than Petani but the convenience of Petani (closer, better amenities) was a definite plus.
